Everything that you talk about with your therapist is confidential. Our counseling licenses require us to keep not only your private information, but also what is discussed in sessions, confidential and to ourselves. There are, however, a few exceptions to the confidentiality rule where we are required by law to divulge something said in session. Because we are mandated reporters, we must report to the appropriate state agencies, if there is physical abuse or neglect happening to a child or vulnerable adult. We would also notify family or emergency services if a client divulged that they were planning on hurting themselves or others.
